Project Brief

You've been approached by a client who believes there is a big market for people wanting to change their behavior (eat less, exercise more, save money, read more, learn the drums, etc.). They would like you to create an app that helps people reach their goals.

In 2020, then President of the United States started a dangerous campaign to discount or deny systemic racism and its effects, remove important training and education within government systems, and attack schools who attempted to teach curriculum regarding systemic racism. It is vitally important for more people to become educated and take a stand against racism.

Problem

Many people have taken up the task of learning more about systemic racism and began efforts to work toward anti-racism. It takes time and consistent effort and can be difficult to know where to start or how to organize anti-racist education into your life. This app will help people get organized and stay on track with daily anti-racist learning goals and a like-minded community.

Solution

Provide resources & encouragement for daily anti-racist learning and activismDiscover & remove current roadblocks for people doing anti-racist learning and work

MEET LINDA She is a hard-working nurse, a loving mother and grandmother, and an engaged citizen. She has been paying attention to the Black Lives Matter movement and she believes in it, but she doesn’t fully understand all of it. She is interested in learning more about systemic racism and how to get involved, but doesn’t exactly know where to start.

pov statement

Point - of - View

An ally interested in becoming dedicated to anti-racist learning and activism.

User

To have a clear path to accurate insights and learning materials as well as the ability to set goals and hold themselves accountable.

Needs

Anti-racist learning and activism is an ongoing process. In order to become a true anti-racist ally, a person needs to be fully dedicated to continuous, sometimes complex work. It is difficult for most people to introduce even a simple new habit into their hectic schedule, and the difficulty increases with the complexity of the habit.

Insight

hmw statements

How - Might - We

hmw assist a user in creating a plan and setting goals for their anti-racist ally journey?
hmw assist a user in carving out time in their busy day for anti-racist learning/activism?
hmw make the app intuitive enough that learning to use it isn't an additional factor for a busy user?
hmw remind a user to complete their daily anti-racist learning and/or activism?

test

Testing & Feedback

Each of the 3 task flows went through three rounds of live testing via a paper prototype. The top takeaways were

Learn grow act

Easy to understand categories

  • Each of the respondents were confused about the difference between Action Plan and Act on the Home Page
  • After testing, one tester suggested more prominently featuring Learn, Grow, Act on the Home Page and moving Action Plan under the Act category

un-
clear

Difficult to understand

  • The meanings behind the sections  on the first page aren’t clear, how does motivate differ from focus?
  • What do they mean in terms of ADHD?
  • May not be clear to someone who is newer to an ADHD diagnosis
  • Need a “success” page or some kind of acknowledgement after entry

dated ui

Styling feels a little old

  • The colors and design feel a little outdated
  • Some white space, curved edges, and a color refresh will help create a more modern feel
